99p jar of honey cures one man’s painful eye infection

99p jar of honey cures one man’s painful eye infection

A shocked man who spent eight years searching for a cure for a chronic eye condition couldn’t believe it when he finally found the remedy.

Frank Dougan, 62, lost his left eye when he was shot with a bow and arrow in a childhood accident and he later developed a painful infection called blepharitis.

He visited doctors and eye specialists and spent a fortune on different drops over the years but nothing worked.

But he was finally cured when he cut his hand while on holiday in Jerusalem and he was advised to put honey on it.

Surprised by the results, when he returned home to Glasgow he bought a jar of 99p Tesco Value Honey and tried it on his eyelid – and within weeks the infection had cleared.

“It’s unbelievable. It’s incredibly effective,” he said yesterday.

“I have spent a fortune on prescription eye drops over the years, I have a fridge full of them.

“It’s funny that at the end of it all the cure would come in the form of a 99p jar of honey from the supermarket. And it’s not bad on toast either.”

The retired soul DJ, who has played for celebrity fans like Rod Stewart, Shirley Bassey, Joe Cocker and Eric Clapton, lost his left eye as a 12-year-old lad.

He has worn a prosthetic eye ever since, but it caused irritation at the end of the day and he eventually developed the painful infection which blighted him for eight years.

Despite the pain, he kept on working as an international DJ, completing long residencies at top hotels around the world including Hong Kong and Düsseldorf.

Frank spent hours visiting doctors and eye specialists but none could find a long lasting treatment.

He said: “I got shot in the eye by a bow and arrow when I was playing with friends as a kid. It was a terrible experience but I got through it and never let it hold me back.

“Sometimes prosthetic eyes can cause irritation, especially at night after you have been wearing them all day.

“Over the years I have learnt to live with it and I get a new eye made every few years. But eight years ago I began to get these infections that turned out to be blepharitis.

“Lots of doctors gave me eyes drops, I have a whole fridge full and I have spent a fortune but nothing worked.”

The fed up Scot retired three years ago and has spent his time travelling the world visiting historic monuments, all the while suffering intolerable pain.

But in February Frank stumbled across the cure while on a trip to Jerusalem.

He first spread the honey on his eyelid twice a day, including on his tear duct, and after just a few weeks the problem cleared up completely.

He said: “I was staying at a B&B when I cut my hand. I didn’t have a first aid kit and the owner recommended putting honey on it.

“I did what he said and the cut healed overnight. Then weeks later I was at home and got a terrible inflammation in my eye.

“I thought I would give it a try and I haven’t had any problems since. I have looked it up and honey has anti-bacterial qualities so that must be it.

“Before that the best cure I could find was Johnson’s tear free baby shampoo.

“I would wash my eye out with it and the pain would go away, but it was only a temporary fix and the pain would always come back. But I went to the opticians a few weeks ago after using the honey and she said she couldn’t find any trace of blepharitis.

“I have been all over the world and seen terrible illnesses in places where people can’t afford to go to the doctor. So to find a cure that’s so cheap could help so many people.

“It’s fantastic. My life has improved so much and for 99p I get a massive 340 gram tub which last for months.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “While we can’t attest to its healing powers, we can say for sure that Everyday Value Honey is great quality at a fantastic price and we’re delighted that it has helped one of our customers.”

Consultant dermatologist Dr Sasi Attili, from added: “Honey does have anti-bacterial qualities and is used in medicine for wound healing and conditions such as leg ulcers.

“It’s hard to say whether a particular treatment will or won’t work because everyone is different, but honey has obviously worked well for this particular patient.”

What earnings reports have revealed about ads

Google and Microsoft offered a contrast in advertising fortunes as they reported earnings for the latest quarter. While Google showed that refinements to the company’s Internet search technology lured more Web surfers to click on its revenue-producing ads, Microsofttook a big non-cash charge that led to its first loss as a public company. Other companies will be reporting in the coming days and weeks.

Here are highlights of recent quarterly earnings reports from selected Internet and media companies and what they say about the state of spending on advertising:

— July 16: Gannett Co. says advertising demand was “uneven” and “choppy.” Ad revenue at Gannett’s newspaper publishing segment fell 8 percent to $594 million. Broadcasting revenue climbed 11 percent to $205 million, helped by stronger political and auto-related TV advertising, as well as growth at Gannett’s Captivate business, which shows ads in elevators. The company expects the Olympics and political spending to bolster results in the second half of the year.

— July 17: Yahoo Inc. says revenue for the latest quarter dipped 1 percent to $1.22 billion. After taking out ad commissions, Yahoo’s net revenue totaled $1.08 billion. That figure fell about $16 million below analyst estimates. The net revenue, a focal point for investors, was slightly higher than the same time last year. That marked the second consecutive quarter that Yahoo had posted modestly higher net revenue.

Omnicom Group Inc., which owns marketing agencies, says its U.S. business helped lift second-quarter net income 1.5 percent, making up for a decline overseas. Domestic revenue grew 5.4 percent, while international revenue fell 1.3 percent.

— July 19: Google Inc’s earnings hit analysts’ target as refinements to the company’s Internet search technology lured more Web surfers to click on its revenue-producing ads. Google’s revenue, excluding that from a recent Motorola purchase, stood at $8.36 billion after subtracting the ad commissions paid to its advertising partners. That was about $70 million below analyst projections. The number of total clicks on Google’s ads during the second quarter increased 42 percent from the same time last year. The increasing volume in clicks helped Google shake off a deepening decline in its ad prices.

Microsoft Corp. takes a $6.2 billion accounting charge because its 2007 purchase of online ad service aQuantive hasn’t yielded the returns envisioned by management. With that, Microsoft’s online services division reported a loss of $6.7 billion, compared with a loss of $745 million a year ago. Revenue fell 8 percent to $735 million.

Hong Kong lowers storm signal, markets to open in afternoon

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Hong Kong’s stock market and offices were expected to open after the city lowered its tropical cyclone warninglate on Tuesday morning, with a severe typhoon that had battered the territory overnight with gale-force winds weakening and moving away.

Typhoon Vicente grounded flights and shut port operations by Monday evening and authorities hoisted the highest No. 10 tropical cyclone signal for several hours overnight, making it one of the strongest to hit the city in the past decade.

A government spokesman confirmed shortly after 10 a.m. (0200 GMT) on Tuesday that the signal had been reduced to 3 from 8.

Financial markets, schools, businesses and non-essential government services close when a No. 8 signal or above is hoisted, posing a disruption to business in the capitalist hub and former British colony that returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

For a link to Reuters TV coverage:

Typhoon Vicente began veering away from the city and weakening earlier on Tuesday but, with the No. 8 signal up, the stock market was closed for the morning.

With the signal lowered to 3, the stock market will open at 1 p.m. Hong Kong time (0500 GMT).

Separately, China’s National Meteorological Center issued an orange alert for Typhoon Vicente, the second highest warning level in China’s four-tier typhoon warning system, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Strengthening gale-force winds uprooted trees, churned up huge waves in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour and sent debris flying, injuring some 30 people as Vicente slammed into the city and the western reaches of China’s Guangdong province.

Fifteen flights were cancelled and more than 200 delayed late on Monday, aviation authorities said, although Hong Kong’s main carrier Cathay Pacific <0293.HK> said it planned to resume some flights. Affected airlines are expected to have to clear a sizeable backlog of stranded passengers.

The Hong Kong Observatory raised the No. 10 signal early on Tuesday as Vicente swept much closer to Hong Kong than initially thought, making this the first time the highest typhoon signal had been raised since 1999.

More than 30,000 Chinese fishing boats were alerted to return to harbour, with 10,560 fishermen taking shelter ashore in Guangdong, Chinese state media reported. Storm surges and sea wave warnings were heightened, with winds of up to 100 kph (60 mph) expected.
